I stand by my original goofy take on the pie in the sky filesystem. Maybe it works as stated, maybe not, but you cannot say that all these functions come at no cost. Zero administration, disk pooling (RAID) and checksumming sounds great, but the hardware is still performing the calculations which come at a cost. You may not notice the cost in CPU time or ram initially, but as you accumulate data any filesystem requires more resources. The FAT or index of files grows. This may need to be held in ram like other database tables and indexes are for speed of access. Sun is banking on customers running this on Opteron or other 64-bit processors with large amounts of ram and fast i/o disks. Sure they may be able to do those things as advertised, but to me it sounds like any other product that is the last word in widgets. Don't bank on something like this running on older hardware such as a 1 GHz or even a single processor. See above. Is it really reasonable to assume that this filesystem is suitable for servers, SANs and desktops alike? By the way, they did state in the article that we might someday outgrow this filesystems limits. That is only reasonable. Just look at the explosion of filetrading movies due to P2P and Broadband. Now it is reasonable to have a 160GB or 200GB disk in a new PC. >From what I've read of Icecast, you can set the number of allowed connections. You can also set the bitrate of the file to lower the cost in bandwidth. If you wanted to keep someone from listening to it again, then you might do some things w/ a cookie. Better idea is to just let them download the file and listen multiple times if that is legal with the file you post. You don't really need a T-1 to serve it up unless you want 20-30+ users simultaneously. streaming media question

Got a question. I want to implement a media player on my website. A 30 second audio. I have access to a T1 to serve it up, but I of course have bandwidth limitations for my box and need to be able to throttle the bandwidth used by the media link and also I want to track concurrent users and be able to throttle accordingly per user, or to reject users because throttling X number of users would make it useless. So any one know ways of doing this? Thanks, Brian

If you do a lot of work with ipsec vpn's, Cisco documentation recommends a mtu of 1300 on all systems. In my testing about 1330 is typically safe.

Well we are talking about a storage capability of 3.4 x10(38th) [that's terabytes to the almost the 9th power]. That's an awful lot of storage and although there might be at some point in the future the capabilities of using such massive amounts of data, it simply doesn't compare to Billy boy's 640k statement. Not to mention we aren't even close to achieving that kind of storage device. Oh sure we could probably build one with current technology, but the cost would be prohibitive and it would probably require liquid cooling. [OT] Forsale: Apple Network Server 500

I'm doing some cleaning up of the apartment and I have a Apple Network Server 500 that is taking up some floor space and I'm trying to get rid of. Specs are as follows. Apple Network Server 500/132 RISC 132mhz PPC 604 cpu 32mb of ram(upgradable to 512mb) 6 PCI slots 7 scsi bays(one holding a 2gb drive, one holding a cdrom, and another holding a dds2 drive) Runs an Apple version of Aix 4.1.4.1 (media included) This thing is a monster it's basically the size of a minifridge. Altho its a bit outdated, It can run ppc linux and netbsd. It was Apples first attempt at the server market and not too many sold. It runs and has plent of extras(I'll throw in a 14in apple monitor w/ converter and couple keyboards).
