Virtual Machines under Linux

I know that using the IBM VM390 system you can run multiple instances of Linux 
as virtual machines.  Is it possible or practical to do that under Linux 
itself?  I have a linux based server where I would like to offer users the 
appearance of having their own distinct server for a number of reasons.
