Actually it was a "merger", and IBM has left Lotus as a separate division.  
The cultural story I heard was that when the suits from Armonk first went to 
meet with the jeans crowd in Cambridge, the Lotus executives showed up to the 
meeting in suits and ties, and the IBM group showed up in blue jeans.  At 
that point, they knew it was going to work.  :-)
