This is because Linux, and the apps that surround linux are deveoloped
in a community.  Most standards are ad-hoc in nature, so the one that
become accepted are the ones that work the "best"  In the M$ world you
have directX because M$ decrede that this would be the way.  You will
not see this in the Open Source World.  Standards arise when neccessary
from the many ways of doing things.
