I believe it's to determine if they have the resources or not to support it.
If they only 'guarantee' support for one OS, then they don't have an unhappy
customer when it turns out their OS is not supported. (And thus, the
requirement to prove that you have a registered copy of win98. During MY
call, they mentioned nothing about such proofs. Almost sounds like FUD.
<shug>)
Regarding the USB vs NIC issue... When I just called to order, they asked me
if I had a USB port *open*. I told them yes, and they started going into a
USB modem yadda yadda yadda, but I asked them if it was an option to just
get a NIC. They said that was no problem.
I think the idea for them is ease of install. Pop in a USB 'modem', some
drivers, maybe a reboot and go.
The story would be different with a NIC, and MUCH different with linux.
