I have a similar problem with my SLS 1.0 either with olwm or twm, so i think it depends by the X server.

If I enter into Linux selecting the Normal VGA mode (80x25), I can't back to text mode: the screen is unreadable!
No problems entering in supervga mode 80x50. I can't try with other modes as my monitor is a normal VGA.

Ah, my configuration is 486Cyrix and et4000 1M.
