lpd forks off and dies so you don't need to use & and the pid it ends up
running with is not the same as the one it starts with. If we assume
that lpd really is not running then we can restate your problem as folows:
I'm using an unspecified version of lpd which I may have compiled myself
or downloaded as a binary, with an unspecifed kernel and libc. When I
try to use this with an unspecifed network configuration the deamon dies
instantly. I've read an unspecified version of the FAQ but this didn't help.
Anyone have a suggestion?
Well I'm shooting in the dark but do you have a directory called:
/var/spool/lpd/ ?
BTW if you get it fixed please let me know if the cause really was
something not in the FAQ.
