From: sevenup@netcom.com (Mark W. Moorcroft) Subject: Progress has it's price :-) Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1992 07:52:45 GMT
I have made more progress today than in the last 3 months BUT.--
I managed to recompile the kernel and install the fscsi patches
(thanx Eric) but in the process I have hosed xfree. If I try startx it
gets right up to the point where it is about to let me position the
various windows and dumps, saying something about a broken pipe.
I am now able to back up to my SCSI tape drive (a major win
!!, thanx again Eric) but it behaves somewhat erraticly even after I
messed with buffer sizes in tar. If there is a 'core' file in the
backup path it will hang the system ??
emacs now works, and would not work before??
I now have several comments and questions:
Q: If I unpack the fscsi stuff in /usr/src it creates a /dist dir. and
installs there. I then have to move quite a bit by hand ?? This is
contrary to the docs I have for installing this package. During the
kernel recompile I got some kind of error message about the 1542
part of the make (I have the 1542) saying it was bailing out. Is
this a problem? (it still works?)
Q: Is the kernel source on tsx-11 pl4, and do I have to then patch to
pl5 myself. The boot message now indicates 98pl4+ ??
Q: I get an unexpected floppy interupt message at boot time about 8 times
out of 10, is this a problem.
Q: Do I have to enter each file path when using 'patch' like I did with
the fscsi diffs or should I have moved the file or entered something
at the command line??
Q: When running tar, compress, and at variuos other times my machine
will hang with the message SCSI host timed out, what can I do?? I have
sent some mail to Eric Y. about bus timings because it was a problem
in DOS as well. I am still waiting for this problem to hose my file
system. :-(
Q: fsck -a gives me a hundred messages about blocks being previously
used by * and now being used by *. I get these every time I run it
even though it states that the file system has been changed at the
end, is this a bug??
Q: What file do I modify before I recompile to fix it so LPT1 is lp1
instead of lp2 like it is now??

setup--
386/16 w/4meg (kernel recompile takes forever)(soon to be 8 meg :-)
1542b SCSI host w/2 80 meg drives and a tape
vanilla vga on paradise plus16 (xmono looked pretty cool when it worked)
coprocessor present
linux is the current SLS release with the fscsi stuff and kernel
sources from tsx-11. The kernel source looked like the only full
source I saw but it did not indicate the patch level by the file
name like the patches next to it??
