Small Office Server

What hardware would you folk specify for a fileserver for a small office? It'll run samba and hylafax, a mailserver to handle the inbound faxes, and needs to be able to archive and back-up files. Several people have recommended Debian as the base OS. I'm interested in suggestions for hardware, base OS, backup hardware/software, and mail handling software.

PS3 for sale

My wife won a PS3 at the company banquet. I've set it up and messed with it, but it just doesn't do it for me. For one thing, we don't have an HDTV. If you do, and you're into gaming, the PS3 is the only HDTV game system. It's also a Blue Ray player, so you can use it to enjoy true HD videos. This is the 40GB model, and comes with the Spiderman 3 movie, plus a coupon for five more Blue Ray movies of your choice. It plays PS1 games, and will work as a game server for the PSP. Several of the games available for it can be played on line; it has built in wired and wireless networking, and will recognize media servers on it's own network, so it can bring your music and video connection from your computer to that big screen at last. I'm offering this as an informal auction. A couple guys from the IRC channel have already offered $300, and there's some interest from the wife's co-workers. Email your bid to me, I'll let you know if you're high bid or not. Auction ends when I think the price is good, or when I get bored, which ever comes first. The Spiderman pack sells for $399 new.

Dedicated Mail Services as opposed to "Portals"

The original model for Hotmail in it's pre-MS incarnation was a "Dedicated Mail Service" Mail as a sole function. The rest of the details centered on using HTML and Open Source. Two of those elements are considered not compatible with most Portal services-, A good mental exercise is asking which ones and why. The summary? It seems that naked greed drives Portal sites to black hole like ingest Mail sites. Then there is a darker side.

RE: yahoo/microsplat Heard the news of this over my morning coffee, gagged and spat.... I've had the same yahoo address for so long I can't remember just when I started it. It's become a repository of useless email and all of my "real" communications are through gmail these days. A couple of people have indicated that I should clarify this: What I'm looking for is someone with time available to take on supporting this site, given the server situation, and the fact that they need occasional tech support. People who are looking for full time work really aren't suitable, because they'll eventually be unavailable. People who don't want to babysit XP boxes would be unhappy. Someone who's building or running a consulting tech support operation would be ideal, or other doing other small-job consulting would be ideal. Someone like I was a year ago, or like Dale Beams with a bunch of different part-time tasks would do too.

The Cube Efffect [was: Yanking the Window Shade]

Doing the proper thing and starting a new thread instead. I've heard much of the famed cube effect, and I think I have an adequately powerful test box on which to run it. I'd like to setup the cube effect on my test box in time for an installfest i'm holding at school this Saturday (morning). What are the keywords I need to google? Suggestions for a Linux LiveCD which is command-line only?

I had a motherboard die on me recently. I had a spare machine with no OS and a spare hard drive, so I booted up KNOPPIX on the spare machine and set up the system to copy files off the dead computer's hard drives onto the backup hard drive. After about 24 hours only 15GB had copied between the two hard drives, with 30GB to go. I assume that KNOPPIX's heavy memory use was slowing down the file transfer, and I think I need a CLI-only LiveCD. The most commonly used tools I need for such a LiveCD are network capability (including DHCP client), Samba support for mounting Samba shares on other machines, and "mc" to make copying functions easier, such as for Windows filenames with lots of spaces.
