Job Summary: The Linux Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and support of the companys Linux infrastructure. This position is highly technical in nature, requires excellent technical skills in a variety of competencies, and the ability to learn and adopt new technologies. The Linux Systems Engineer will join a team of highly motivated engineers who are passionate about technology. The team is responsible for supporting our 24x7 systems infrastructure. Responsibilities: Engineers, implements, and supports the organizations Linux systems infrastructure Evaluates current Linux systems environments, conducts research, recommends, and implements innovate systems technology that can enhance the reliability, security, productivity, and efficiency of the Linux infrastructure Develops and maintains documentation of design, as well as, on-going operation and administration of systems infrastructure Contribute to and maintains technical standards for Linux systems infrastructure Provides fourth-tier support for the efficient resolution of Linux systems-related incidents, service requests, and problems; and updates service desk management tool accordingly Assists other IT functional teams to troubleshoot critical Linux business systems Solves complex problems with many variables Required Candidate Experience & Qualifications: 5+ years of experience as a Linux Systems Engineer, or a Linux Administrator Certifications preferred (e.g. Linux+ or LPIC) An Associate's degree or higher in computer science, MIS, IS, related field or equivalent and related work experience Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of systems technology, such as but not limited to Ubuntu Server 8 or higher, Landscape, Apache, VMware vSphere 4 or higher, Moodle, Wordpress, and NAS and SAN (EMC, Equallogic, NetApp) Customer-centric attitude with internal and external customers High level of written communication and documentation skills Possess knowledge in ITIL processes such as Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, Release Management, Service Delivery, and Continual Service Improvement Must be disciplined, dynamic and flexible to manage multiple projects and tasks, work effectively in a rapidly changing environment and meet ongoing and overlapping deadlines Must be able to operate autonomously with little supervision to achieve desired goals Work weekends/nights on occasion for maintenance Participate

New versions of popular operating systems, whole new operating systems, DNSSEC, larger IPv6 deployments, the shift to mobile etc mean that the strategies for best DNS performance are changing. A few years ago we asked you to help us optimize the PowerDNS Recursor by sending us (anonymized) dumps of resolver traffic, and that was tremendously helpful for us in improving the performance of the recursor. We are now asking you to help us again, since we've observed that our few years old traffic is no longer representative of all the new devices on the internet these days. And to help you along, we'll lovingly ship you some PowerDNS mugs and pens to thank you for your PCAPS! We will of course not share your PCAP files with anybody, and we also provide the 'dnswasher' tool to remove your customer's IP addresses from the dumps. What we are looking for is traffic from/to PowerDNS Recursors. To record, try: # tcpdump -i eth0 -w for-powerdns-from-x -C 1000 -s 1600 port 53 (or -i any) And leave this running for as long as you want. It will generate 1G large PCAP files which will help us tremendously. To test yourself, feed the file generated to 'dnsreplay' for example, or 'dnsscope' and get statistics on how well you are doing. To submit the files to us, optionally feed them through 'dnswasher' to remove customer IP addresses, and then upload to ftp://training.powerdns.com/anon This anon directory is world writable, but not readable. Setting Gnome resolution from the command line

Speaking of Gnome, does anyone know how to change the Gnome resolution from the command line? I don't mean using xrandr or fbset (I've tried and those don't work...this is a BeagleBone with Angstrom). When the HDMI interface is working, I can run the display settings GUI and pick from a few resolutions auto-detected via EDID. What I need is a way to ask Gnome from the command line what display options are available and select one when the system pics a resolution the HDMI monitor doesn't like (so there's no visible GUI). I can't pull up anything on setting Gnome desktop settings via the command line on Google, but maybe I'm not asking the right way. Anyone know Gnome well enough to point me towards where to start looking? -- Charles Steinkuehler charles(a)steinkuehler.net

SAMBA4 share confusion

Admittedly, I should be past this point, but I'm not... Trying to share a directory via SAMBA4 so that a Windows machine can write to it (transferring 700+ GB of email data). I have created the share and marked it as Writable. I've gotten the share to show up when browsing, and I have assigned allowed users via the Webmin SAMBA interface. When I browse to the share it requests my credentials (local UNIX) and then shows me the available shares, but it won't let me browse the shares. After a bit of man'ing and googling, I have gotten even more confused as there seem to be about 500 different solutions... Any pointers/advice/help? -- Mike

Job Openings

We have a couple of job openings where I work that haven't been officially announced yet, so I don't have formal details. One position is a Linux Administrator here in Kansas City. Currently at the Bannister complex, due to move else somewhere in the city by 2014. Oracle knowledge is a big plus. This is not Windows with a little Linux on the side, it's straight Linux. The other position we're going to try to fill in Fort Worth first, and if we don't get the right guy there we'll consider placing someone here. Windows administrator with good knowledge of Citrix. You'll need to go through Tek Systems on contract-to-hire for 3-6 months, but if you want early consideration go ahead and send me a resume. I don't have any salary information yet, but we won't be above current averages.

DOS prevention

I have a CentOS web server that has recently been brought to a halt on two separate occasions. Checking the access.log, it appears that it was a Denial of Service (DOS) attack (hundreds of HTTP requests in a very short time, all from a single IP address). I want to prevent these types of attacks from bringing the server to its knees. We have a hardware firewall (SonicWall) in place, but it isn't quite new enough to run the firmware that allows rate-limiting. I have found a number of tutorials that show how to do this type of thing with IPTABLES. Is there a better solution? Supposing I go with IPTABLES, do I need to include rules to allow FTP and SSH (the only other services on the server)? Would any of you be willing to assist me with this? Hi Mike, Have you checked around Lawrence? I know back around 7 years ago, there was a group of KU students (20+ at times) that would meet up once in a while for a linux meetup. Though it was on the KU campus, it wasnt limited to just KU students. This doesnt quite answer your original question, but Lawrence is right around the corner from Topeka and might be a lot easier for you to travel to. I cant find a web page on this meetup, but maybe one of these guys in this group could help you. http://www.ittc.ku.edu/kurt/ (KUSP: Kernel/User Systems Programming).
